Primate Bones found in Gujarat Coal Mine

A cache of preserved bones in Gujarat Coal mine probably are the most primitive primate bones discovered. The 25 bones date back to a  time when India was a drifting land mass isolated from the northern continents and moving towards southern Asia. The newly discovered group bones are 54.5 million years old but considerably primitive than the oldest known primate fossil called Teilhardina which first appears in deposits  56 million years old. Many of the bones show features that do not clearly belong either category.A study of the bones showed the primates were rat-sized and tree dwelling. It leads credence to the theory that primates native to India played an important role in the very early evolution of mammals including humans, apes and monkeys. The little primates represent a very early stage of primate evolution.
